Stamic Sinfonia in A major and other other hidden gems of classical music.

Johann Stamitz ( Czech Jan Václav Antonín Stamic; 1717 –1757) was a Bohemian composer and violinist. He was a pivotal figure in the early Classical period and a key contributor to the development of the symphony and was instrumental in shaping the Mannheim School, which was renowned for its innovative orchestral techniques and dynamic contrasts. Sinfonia in A showcases his mastery of orchestration and his flair for creating vibrant, energetic music that captivates audiences.

Featuring:

Tomas Hurnik (cello) and the talented String Ensemble of University of Canterbury students.

Tomas Hurnik has a rich musical career performing with Czech symphonies, recording for radio and television, winning various chamber music competitions and taking part in prestigious chamber groups such as Talich Chamber Orchestra. He has played with various period instrument groups such as Musica Florea, Capella Regia Prague and Solamente Naturali with which he performed and toured around Europe. He continues to be passionate about period instrument playing and organizes and performs in concerts, workshops and master classes of Baroque music in New Zealand.

The String Ensemble of the University of Canterbury is a distinguished group of emerging artists, carefully selected for their exceptional talent, remarkable performance abilities, and deep passion for music. These young musicians represent the future of classical performance, bringing fresh energy and innovative interpretations to the stage. Under the expert guidance of renowned cellist Tomas Hurnik, the ensemble undergoes intensive rehearsals designed to hone their skills and unify their artistic vision.
