A Manatū Taonga audio guide to Auckland's iconic Harbour Bridge. Check out the Ministry for Culture and Heritage's audio guide to the Auckland Harbour Bridge in the image carousel above.

The idea of a bridge across Auckland’s Waitematā Harbour was first mooted in the 1860s – but almost a century passed before the Auckland Harbour Bridge opened in 1959. The city's distinctive 'coat hanger' bridge was expanded in the late 1960s, with two extra lanes clipped onto each side.
