This is a 'must do' on any visit to Hawke's Bay between October and late April - either along the beach or overland over Cape Kidnappers. It is possible to walk there and back but it's a long way and you need to pay attention to the tides as at high tide water completely cover the beach access route and there is no other way out - you need to allow at least 5 hours for the return walk. The overland trip or the organised trip the along the beach are the best options. The starting point is Clifton. Both trips are great - you not only learn about the geology of the area but the Maori legend of the Cape and about the Gannets and the colonies.
