Map showing Cook Landing Site National Historic Reserve

This site commemorates Captain James Cook's first landing on New Zealand soil and the first meeting of European and Maori. Cook and his crew arrived at the site in 1769. The area was also the landing place of the Horouta and Te Ikaroa-a-Rauru waka around 1350.

A memorial was built in 1906 to acknowledge the importance of this site to the history of New Zealanders.
