The only working flax stripping museum in the world. Offers visitors an opportunity to look at the processes and products that were a vital part of Foxton's development.

In 1869 Mr C J Pownall set up the first flax mill in Foxton installing a stripper machine that he had designed. The flax industry thrived throughout New Zealand during the later years of the 19th century but during the 20th century there was a gradual decline and the last mill, in Foxton closed in 1973.

I last visited this Flax Museum the other year, wonderful to learn how flax was utilised. Great to see the machines in action.. Many of our early Settlers used Flax.. so visit and see how Flax was treated, used... have visited the Museum several times, never bored, as its HISTORY. If we didnt have museums like this we wouldnt learn about what our ancestors used or managed!
