2011 marks the 75th year of the Invercargill Repertory Society Inc. bringing theatre to Southland audiences.
The society relies on the dedication and hard work of its members for its longevity. Over the years hundreds of volunteers have contributed hours of their own time to directing, performing, designing sets, building sets, painting sets, properties, costuming, publicity, lighting, running front of house and all the other tasks associated with putting on a production season.
In a typical calendar year the Society produces three seasons and is always looking for new people to get involved in both on stage and behind the scenes roles. The Society also hosts acts for the annual Southland Festival of the Arts and supports other local arts events.
Located on the corner of Esk and Jed Streets, close to Invercargill's CBD, the Society is fortunate to have its own theatre an intimate theatre space that seats up to 140 people. The theatre building originally was the St John's Ambulance Hall and was purchased by the Society in January 2000. Since the purchase the building has undergone quite a transformation. The current major renovation project will focus on the front of house area.
Next door to the main theatre building (in Jed Street) is the Society's wardrobe. The wardrobe is full of an extensive range of costumes for hire. Check out the Wardrobe page on this website for more information.
