Mona Vale Homestead is closed due to earthquake damage however the beautiful Mona Vale Gardens remain open to the public. A repair programme for the Homestead has been approved and this is due to begin early 2015.

In a country of outstanding beauty, Christchurch is nationally recognised as the Garden City and officially sealed the reputation winning the Garden City of the World title in 1993. The beautiful Mona Vale gardens - five and a half hectares of gardens and landscaped lawns, gently rolling down to the Avon river - are part of the reason for winning this prestigious status.

Located just five minutes from the city centre and open daily to the public, visitors and locals alike delight in the wandering around Mona Vale’s beautiful Iris Garden, lily pond, rhododendrons, camellias, conifers and maples.

Of particular note is the Rose Garden which was established in 1994 in conjunction with the World Rose Convention. It is a unique garden for the City of Christchurch operated and tended by The Canterbury Horticultural Rose Society and The Heritage Rose Society.

Visitors enter through an arbour into a riot of colour including many modern hybrids and heady intermingling perfumes from the ever-pleasing Old World varieties. (Bloom season: November-May)

At the far end of the garden is the restored Fernery. The original Fernery was built at the time of the 1906 Christchurch World Exhibition but fell in to disrepair. It was scheduled for demolition but once again a local group came to the rescue with funds for it to be rebuilt. Planting’s commenced in 1993 and the reopening was celebrated in 1994.

The newest addition to the Mona Vale gardens is a Gazebo situated on the Mound Lawn. Donated by a Canterbury businesswoman in the 1990's, the gazebo features a copper onion-domed roof with stained glass windows and is modelled on an illustration in the 19th century children’s book, Floria’s Feast by Walter Crane.

Within this beautiful setting, the charming historic Homestead operates as an all-day, licensed restaurant and function venue offering a menu of delicious cuisine with indoor dining or alfresco options plus punting on the river operating October – April.
