Get up close and personal with New Zealand's native flora and fauna at this idyllic bird sanctuary. Ngā Manu is located within easy reach of Wellington on the spectacular Kāpiti Coast. There are over 13 hectares for you to explore, dedicated to conservation and education.

Tuatara, kiwi, morepork, tui, fantail, native waterfowl, kea and kaka all live within the grounds. Join a Bird Feed Out Tour at 11am and see the native birds fed by informative staff and learn about our unique species. Many birds come down to feed, providing fantastic photo opportunities and close encounters. Watch or participate in feeding endangered long fin eels at 2pm daily. In the summer months Monarch and Admiral Butterflies enjoy the Butterfly Garden and Caterpillars and chrysalises can be seen on display in the Information Centre.

Take an easy stroll through Kāpiti’s largest remaining remnant of coastal lowland swamp forest. Approximately 700 species of native plants have been recorded at the reserve, ranging from silver ferns through to 400 year old Kahikatea trees. Over 50 different bird species come and go around the wetlands, bush and surroundings. Walk-through aviaries house many native birds. Climb to the top of the lookout tower for a wonderful view of the reserve, bring a picnic or hire BBQ Island for your group or function. Ice cream, snacks and drinks are available in the Information Centre or head over to one of the local cafes at Waikanae Beach before or after your visit.

Most visitors would spend approximately 1.5 hours at the reserve, but if you bring a picnic it is easy to spend far longer. All pathways are easily walked and there's seating around the reserve. There is a Conservation and Education Centre that can be hired for workshops, functions and events. Wheelchair access and facilities are available and an on-site wheelchair is available for visitor use. Come and enjoy a day seeing the natural wonders of New Zealand!
