Known throughout the country for its rich history and huge size the Otatara Pa Historic Reserve is visited by tourists and locals all year round. Otatara Pa covers approximately 44 ha of terraces, pits, gardens and defences and is one of the largest and most ancient Maori pa sites in Hawke's Bay. Earthworks of many of the terraced dwelling sites and food pits can still be seen today.
As a major Ngati Kahungunu pa site, it is the cultural and archaeological hub of the Hawke's Bay.
