Map showing Reynolds Hall

Website

The Reynolds' Hall is centrally located within historic Tolaga Bay township, only 55km from Gisborne city on the East Coast of the North Island. This public hall was built for the use of the local community in 1915 in memory of Ralph Reynolds, a local station owner killed in New Zealand's first polo fatality on Boxing Day 1913.

The Reynolds’ Hall is a unique part of East Coast built heritage, and one of the last ‘grand halls’ in the Gisborne district. The building is listed as Category 2 by the Historic Places Trust, one of several buildings in the Monkhouse Street precinct with this designation. The distinctive early 20th century interior, which includes a raked (sloping) stage, is protected under the district plan.

The Reynolds’ Hall is held in trust for the Tolaga Bay community, and is available for hire by groups and individuals at reasonable rates.

The Reynolds' Hall was used as the local movie theatre for the first 60 years of its life, and has hosted thousands of public and private functions for over nine decades. It is the largest public space available in Tolaga Bay, complementing local marae and other community facilities.

The Reynolds' Hall facilities include a large auditorium (with gallery), stage, supper room and kitchen, and bar area. Planned improvements to the hall are under consideration.
