Back in the 1900's swimming in the ocean was illegal, protests around this led to the Pacific Bathing Club which eventually spawned the St Kilda & St Clair Surf Clubs.
Originally, the site of the St Kilda Surf Club held some surf life saving equipment on along the bank, which lead to a shed being build and years later the shed was replaced by a building where the current club sits today.
