Steam Scene

Website
The Society was formed in 1968 to bring together all those interested in steam driven machinery of all types and in preserving and exhibiting such machinery. A large Traction Engine Rally and Steam Exhibition was held at Templeton in 1969 and shortly after it was decided to seek suitable land to form a “home” for the society and to enable a permanent operating steam museum to be set up. At this time the North Canterbury Catchment Board (now Environment Canterbury) was opening up McLeans Island as a recreational area and the society was fortunate in obtaining the lease of the 30 acres of land you see today.
