Laurie, your host at the Jolly Potter has achieved the near impossible - a restaurant / cafe bar that caters for almost all tastes. Established in 1993 The Jolly Potter has become one of the busiest little cafes in the South Island.
A warm welcoming bar with an extensive selection of wine by the glass or bottle as well as twelve tap beers including Guinness, Murphy's and Kilkenny. There is a comprehensive lunch menu, with many items under $15, a favourite of which is the chicken doorstopper - a huge sammie with chicken, bacon, lettuce and tomato, served with spicy wedges.
The evening menu with steaks, fish (the blue cod fresh from Otago waters) chicken and vegetarian options stand out as well as an ever-changing specials board. There is also a varied dessert selection with an excellent sticky date pudding.
There is live music occasionally (usually Irish of course!) and the maps and decorations indicate the Shamrock influence.
A recent addition has been an area for those who need a quiet puff outside with built-in television, so no one will miss a bit of the rugby.
Not as well known is the Jolly Potter's retail / merchandise shop with caps and jackets featuring trademark logos and local pottery. Also available are gift vouchers for dining or items from the display. Displays on the restaurant wall feature Temuka Pottery's ware as far back as the 1940s.
Truly a restaurant with a difference. The Jolly Potter's quintessential quirkiness is not to be missed.
