This is an extensive historical museum with a strong rural flavour that utilises much of its vintage equipment. Hear the romantic chug of an old steam train, feel the power of the engine pulling the gently rocking carriages along and watch the steam drift past your window and dissipate. Admire the glistening brass work and the elegant inside furnishings or sit back and dream of sweet nothings as you roll through the vast open countryside of one on New Zealand’s most beautiful areas.

The museum offers a fire station complete with fire appliances from Ashburton's formative years upward, the Lynn Museum of Woodworking and Ornamental Turning, an extensive vintage tractor collection, a quaint pioneer country village that contains a printing works, replica shops and a historic church and a range of steam locomotives including an 'A'64- from the New Zealand Railway's construction days in Canterbury; a 'K'88 'Washington' from the Vogel era of railway expansion in the late 1870s and a 'Ja'1260.
