Mayor Island, Tauranga
Tuhua (Mayor Island) lies between coastal and oceanic waters in the western Bay of Plenty. A marine reserve on the northern end of the island was established in January 1993 to protect marine organisms and their habitats for present and future generations.
A mix of over sixty reef fish species including subtropical species can be found in the reserve, which is bathed in the seasonal warm East Auckland Current.
