The Kete Whiri is a traditional pipi kete or kumara harvesting basket. Tutored by Yvonne Hammond experienced harakeke weaver.
From plant to product: the flax is prepared with the flax fibre exposed at the end, this is referred to as muka.
The weaving of the kete commences with the muka ends that are plaited together to form a strong durable base for this everyday utility basket.
The next stage is to construct the corners that we will weave up to the desired height of the kete . Finishing off with a plait around the top, and handles to complete your own traditional maori kete. There is an option to embellish with your own personalised stone, shell or beads.
This workshop is the third workshop in the series of three, it will include the techniques of weaving and plaiting skills specific to creating the Kete Whiri.
Workshop One, Introduction to Harakeke.
