Through this work, I have explored challenges that occurred in a relationship where the balance of power was unequal.
This autobiographical body of work has come about through observing myself, everyday routines, environment and changes in my situation as though I am disembodied from the scene itself. Using a digital camera to document my domestic surroundings and observations I have been able to make images that reflect a certain time, feeling or emotion. Digital files are downloaded, processed and printed to create a final resolved image. Studying these images in post-production offers a way for me to observe my own situation at a distance with new clarity of mind.
This methodology is a means of escape, and of visual articulation for situations that I had not previously been able to discuss. Using a process of observational contemplation, approached through the lens, as an attempt to better understand my own situation. Images created during periods of emotional pressure – everyday subtleties that draw my eye.
“The beauty of those places I soared over is with me still, and in all my dreams as in my waking life was a love of place, a sense that places were embodiments of emotions, were anchors, were companions of a sort, even protectors or parents.”
