Spend a few hours on a Saturday morning taking a guided step into traditional mahi toi with an emphasis on tikanga. This is a workshop for everyone, ages 10 and over.
Guided by skilled Kairaranga Lacey Bartlett, participants will craft their own putiputi as well as gain an insight into mahi raranga: through karakia, harakeke harvest, preparation and, of course, raranga itself. Lacey will also provide handouts that participants can take back to their whare with their putiputi.
Tutor: Lacey Bartlett
Date: 5th March 2022
Materials and equipment supplied.
Students must bring their own gardening gloves and must wear covered shoes.
Lacey is a resident artist at Okorore Ngā Toi Māori, part of The Incubator Creative Hub. A recent graduate of Toihoukura School of Māori Visual Art, Lacey has been able to evolve her art speciality through embracing her creative thought process, blending traditional techniques and resources with contemporary concepts.
In December 2020 Lacey returned to Tauranga Moana and has since been actively involved with different weaving kaupapa such as workshops at The Historic Village and Ūkaipo – a programme delivered by BOPDHB which offers support to hapū Māmā providing an opportunity for them to weave their own Waikawa.
