New Forest School

New Forest School outdoor classroom is an open space under mature native trees with benches and a rainproof cover, next to a shallow creek of pure drinkable spring water. It is 18 km north of Masterton. Set on the edge of 240 acres of land that has been regenerating for 12 years and close to the Tararua Forest Park entrance.

Set up as a learning environment for early childhood and school groups, it is a place where children can enjoy an unstructured time in nature, cook on the fire, feed the horses and make and create with sticks and clay. A nature experience where they can get muddy, take risks, challenge themselves, explore and discover the beauty and wonder of our natural living world.

The walk to the top with views of Masterton township and Tararua ranges, takes 1.30 hrs, back in time to play the Forest School way. An age-appropriate story or a Maori myths, will told after lunch.
