Pūhoi, up the Boohai - Roadside Stories

Ticket Information

A Manatū Taonga audio guide to Pūhoi. Check out the Ministry for Culture and Heritage's audio guide in the image carousel above.

Founded by immigrants from Bohemia in Europe, the settlement of Pūhoi was originally extremely isolated – leading to the phrase ‘up the boohai’ (a corruption of the town’s name), meaning ‘in the back of beyond’. Today the historic town is popular with visitors, and is known for its cheese production.
