Selwyn Community Education is based at Selwyn College, Kohimarama, Auckland.

This is a new course for 2019, tutored by Paul Judge and runs on Sunday 26 May 2019 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM.

What impact has the environmental movement had on contemporary art? How has the urgency of climate change affected artists? Join Paul Judge as he looks internationally, as well as locally, examining the works of Colin McCahon and Don Driver from an ecological perspective.

This course looks at a range of modernist and contemporary artists, both national and international, whose work is at the forefront of progressive practice, responding to the current crisis in challenging ways. A case study of two important New Zealand artists, Don Driver and Colin McCahon, will examine their work afresh from an ecological perspective. The course will also review the work of a number of contemporary artists we all should know about, from both Western and Eastern traditions.

Expected learning outcomes:
- Gain a basic knowledge of contemporary critical theory of the Anthropocene.
- Gain a knowledge of a range of artists and art practice relevant to the contemporary era.
- Become familiar with a range of practical methodologies for teaching this topic.
- Become familiar with the creative possibilities of the link between theoretical discourse and practice.

Who should attend? This course would be of interest to anyone with an interest in what is happening in contemporary art, from students of art history to practicing artists and teachers of art, art history and cultural studies.

From tutor Paul Judge: I developed this course over many years teaching a multi-disciplinary practice-based media arts course at tertiary level, as well as delivering a number of conference papers. I recently produced and directed a documentary film on New Zealand’s leading assemblage sculptor, Don Driver, in which I examine themes of animal consciousness and environmentalism in his work.

Our mission is to provide quality affordable and accessible lifelong learning opportunities for our community.
