This course, new for 2019, starts on 15 October 2019 with classes 7 - 9 PM over four Tuesdays.
Come on a journey from the early Roman world through to the triumphs and tribulations of the Byzantine era. Discover how theological controversies shaped creative expression. Learn how different styles of mosaics, architecture and sculpture represented religious and political power. Consider how legacies of the ancient world have informed and shaped modern thinking. This course is also an excellent preparation for the icon making workshop in November.
Expected learning outcomes:
- Understand the significance of religion in the ancient world
- Understand how art was affected by philosophy and religion
- Understand how art responded to the controversies of art and religion
- Identify key indicators of Eastern and Western styles of art practice and how these differences illustrate theological understandings.
Who should attend? This course develops a framework for considering the complexities of art history. It also offers an excellent foundation for the icon making workshop in November.
From tutor Libby Brookbanks: I have always been intrigued by the influence of the ancient world on our understanding of philosophy and religion and have developed my own art practice around my research. I believe an overview of foundational Western ideas and an understanding of the development of creative expression enriches our appreciation for contemporary art practices.
Our mission is to provide quality affordable and accessible lifelong learning opportunities for our community.
