Tahu-nui-ā-Rangi - Cello, marimba and the Aurora Australis are coming to Otago Museum’s Perpetual Guardian Planetarium!

This once-off, never-before-heard, immersive audio and visual concert production of the first ever New Zealand composition for cello and marimba combined with the atmospheric lights and colourful, electric dancing veils of the Aurora Australis, promises to transport the audience to a world of light and sound. Tahu-nui-ā-Rangi', Te Reo Māori for Aurora Australis, visible from our southernmost parts of New Zealand, is the title of the work composed by one of New Zealand’s most renowned composers, Gareth Farr. It explores and represents spiritual connection and universal belonging in a multi-sensory experience that draws together music, philosophy, culture, art and science. The world premiere of the one-movement work will be performed by Duo Col Legno, with seasoned soloists Heleen du Plessis (cello) and Yoshiko Tsuruta (marimba), who combine their individual strengths to form a dynamic, charismatic duo.

Dr Ian Griffin, Astronomer and Director of the Otago Museum, will provide enlightenment on the scientific aspects of the magical phenomenon unique to the region. Oana Jones, the Otago Museum’s Full Dome Producer will offer a glimpse into some cultural meanings of the Aurorae while the composer and artists will talk about the music in a social get-together with a cash bar that will precede the performance. Supported by a Creative New Zealand Arts Grant, the work will form part of Duo Col Legno’s Chamber Music New Zealand tour throughout the country in May.

Be the first to hear Tahu-nui-ā-Rangi! Seats are limited for a show at 6.30 pm and 8 pm.

Online bookings only - 38 Seats per show only.
