Following on from Doc Edge Pitch 2019, Doc Edge Clinic #5 is the "Where to Now?" for filmmakers looking to move their documentary projects from the development phase into production.
After the pitching process, filmmakers may have many questions as to how to move their projects into production: How do you follow through on the feedback from your pitch? Does your story need to change focus? What is your audience engagement plan and has it shifted since your pitch? Should you pitch it again at a film market? How do you attach a producer? How do you find funding? What revenue streams are available domestically and internationally? Should you be looking overseas for co-producers? What contracts need to be put in place at this stage? Do you need consent from your subjects? Can your documentary have a social impact campaign? Should you start thinking about finding a crew?
SPEAKERS
Leanne Pooley, director/producer
Leanne has been a documentary filmmaker for over 25 years and has directed films all over the world. In 2011, Leanne’s work was recognised by the New Zealand Arts Foundation and she was made a New Zealand Arts Laureate. Leanne was awarded the Doc Edge Superhero Award (2017) and was named an “Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit” for Services to Documentary Filmmaking in the 2017 New Year’s Honours List. She is a member of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Karin Williams, writer/director/producer
Karin Williams is an award-winning writer/director/producer of narrative fiction and documentary film and TV productions in Aotearoa and the U.S. Karin’s work has earned dozens of honours, including five regional Emmys and the Peabody Award for television production. Credits include working on series and prime-time specials for Discovery, Court TV, CNN, National Geographic and PBS.
Her independent films have focused on the stories of her Polynesian ancestors and other indigenous people. Her work has screened around the world at events and festivals across the USA, Europe and the Pacific. Karin served as Development Executive at the New Zealand Film Commission for three years from 2015-18
