The moon is the brightest on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar.

In East Asia and Southeast Asia, the Moon Festival (known as mid-Autumn Festival in the northern hemisphere) is a time to celebrate the arrival of the new moon.

Families and friends gather to enjoy the full moon along with children happily carrying their lanterns, lighting the way as they stroll along in the garden or park.

Imagine, against the backdrop of the full moon is a park filled with colourful lanterns, interactive lights, riddles and quiz challenges, melodious music, dances and songs by diverse talent.

You hear the call of the Kapa haka, the beat of Japanese Taiko drums and Pasifika drums, children singing, contemporary and traditional musical instruments being played, and crowds of people dancing responding to the calls to join in the fun.

For foodies and the adventurous, mouth-watering selection of ethnic foods will be available from food trucks and stalls in the vicinity and of course, there is the huge selection of delicious options in the adjacent Balmoral town centre and along Dominion Road itself.

Curious about how to make mooncakes, kimchi, dumpling or wagashi? Then join the food demonstrations. There is also a workshop on making beeswax wrap.

It’s fun carrying your own handmade lantern. If you do not have one, join in the lantern-making activity to make one of your very own.

Origami? We have that too.
So, come along and join in the festivities.

The Dominion Rd Moon Festival is new to Auckland.

This inaugural event is proudly bought to you by the Albert Eden Local Board, Balmoral Chinese Business Association and the Dominion Rd Business Association.
