“Tiakina Ngā Manu (Battle for our Birds and beyond):
Planning for a response to a very widespread mast event”

Speaker: Bill Fleury, Biodiversity Planner for DoC Lower N.Island Region

In recent years the Department of Conservation has been attempting large-scale control of predators on the mainland to protect species at risk of national or regional extinction.

Bill Fleury will describe some of the science and logic behind the programme
He will talk about how an understanding of the risks has developed:
- what tools are used to identify the need for intervention
- why different interventions and strategies are used and how sites are selected.

He will also give an update on some of the monitoring that is being done to assess the effectiveness of the programme and the predictions for mast driven predator plagues in 2019.

Questions are welcome.
