Architecture Through the Lens showcases a collection of films that utilise architecture as a narrative device and explore historical architectural styles through cinema. Each film in this selection goes beyond simple production elements and set design, with architecture indeed becoming an integral character in each story.

This film festival aspires to unify architecture and cinema, giving exposure to diverse international films that present incredible architectural signatures on screen. Our intention is to do this in a way that is accessible to both cineastes and architecture enthusiasts alike!

At an academic level, there is an opportunity for this film festival to facilitate an architectural discourse on cinema, with multiple screenings offering free introductions and Q&A’s by a duo of speakers, Eu Jin Chua (Auckland University of Technology, University of Auckland) and David Cowlard (University of Auckland, Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design).

Architecture Through the Lens features:
- Yasujiro Ozu’s “Tokyo Story” (1958)
- Andrzej Zulawski’s “Possession” (1981)
- Michelangelo Antonio’s “Red Desert” (1964)
- Phillipe de Broca’s “That Man From Rio” (1964)
- Jacques Tati’s “Playtime” (1967)
- Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s “World On a Wire” (1973)
- Jean-Luc Godard’s “Two Or Three Things I Know About Her” (1968)
- Andrei Tarkovsky’s “Nostalghia” (1983)

Architecture Through the Lens would not be possible without the support of ArchitectureNOW, ArchitectureNZ, Dulux, The Goethe Institut and The Italian Embassy, Wellington.
