Hosts: Trevor, Angela & Ian

Angela, Trevor and Ian look forward to welcoming you to their farm, which is just a scenic 45-minute drive from Napier. Trevor and Angela have been farming here since 2006, taking the farm over from Angela’s father, Ian, who has been on the property since 1992. Ian still takes a keen interest in on-farm activities, keeping busy with tractor work and looking after the calves.

The farm is around 400 hectares, with 200 hectares used for dairy farming 560 cows. The rest of the property farms sheep and beef, and provides winter feeding. Trevor and Angela are keen to take part in Open Gates to showcase the work they have been doing on-farm.

They are committed to changing their farming system to improve their environmental footprint, including completing an environmental plan to protect the farm and nearby Lake Tutira. So far, changes have included fencing off vulnerable areas and winter cropping on flatter land to reduce opportunity for run off. This adds to the environmental measures Ian put in place, including fencing all the waterways off around 25 years ago.

Angela is a teacher aide at the local school, which will be supporting Open Gates on the day. Some of the children hope to bring their Animal Day pets to share with kids from town, and there will also be a sausage sizzle and hay rides to enjoy. So, bring a picnic along and make a day of it with a visit to the country.
