Talk: “Protecting and growing lizard populations on the Kapiti Coast”
Speaker: Paul Callister, Nga Uruora – the Kapiti biodiversity project

Paul Callister will talk about the work Nga Uruora – the Kapiti biodiversity project is doing on Paekakariki-Pukerua Bay escarpment. A grant from the Ministry for the Environment has allowed three local restoration groups to undertake lizard surveys on their land.

This identified some lizard ‘hot spots’ within the Paekakariki-Pukerua Bay escarpment, which in turn has led to new projects involving habitat restoration and enhanced pest control with the aim of growing and expanding lizard populations. But the process has also generated much debate amongst lizard experts and volunteers as to how best to look after local lizards.
