A Gaelic-speaking Highlander, the Reverend D. M. Stuart arrived in Dunedin in 1860 to serve as minister of Knox Church.
The Church had specified that their inaugural minister should be ‘large-minded, prudent, affable, gentle, yet firm and ready for every good work’, and Stuart fitted this exacting bill. As church leader, philanthropist, educationalist and social reformer, Stuart was indefatigable in seeking the improvement of his adopted home. Professor Liam McIlvanney assesses Stuart’s extraordinary impact on early Otago.
