'Greta: A Journey', is a play about Ellen Kelly, the mother of Australian outlaw, Ned Kelly. The play is drawn from historical accounts and in places uses Ellen's own words.

The work features original songs and music, which are performed by Dunedin musicians, Stephen Kilroy, Craig Monk, and Pete Stewart. Written by Pete Stewart & Kiri Bell, directed by Kiri Bell.

'Greta' is a solo performance told through monologue and song by Ellen Kelly, an Irish immigrant who as a child arrived in Victoria, Australia in 1841. Ellen reminisces on a life long lived and of the trials, tribulations and triumphs she experienced as a woman, and as a mother, and as an Irish immigrant. The play brings to the fore the indomitable spirit of this fiercely protective mother, who for the most part history has designated a backseat. Set in the tiny scattered township of Greta, northeast Victoria; where the often harsh and unforgiving landscape serves as a backdrop for a tale that all too often parallels its surroundings. However, the play is a celebration of this remarkable woman and her life's journey.

This play is bought to you by bellbird Productions, the makers of 'The Iris Project' which was nominated for Best Script in the 2016 Dunedin Fringe Festival.

'Greta: A Journey' was performed as a work-in-progress at the New Athenaeum Theatre in November 2018, to rave audience reviews! Join us on this highly entertaining and heartfelt tale that spans over 90 years!

Please note the Thursday 21st March session for this event has been cancelled.
