Projects from the Ngāi Tahu Archive:

Sir Tipene O’Regan, Takerei Norton and Helen Brown. Entry by koha.

Understanding the past can be fundamental in creating a blueprint for the future. Ngāi Tahu kaumātua and historian, Sir Tipene O’Regan, will lead a panel discussion with Takerei Norton (Ngāi Tahu Archive Manager) and Helen Brown (Senior Ngāi Tahu Researcher) on the work of the Ngāi Tahu Archive Team in preserving Ngāi Tahu history for future generations.

The panel will discuss two award-winning projects from the Ngāi Tahu Archive:
Kā Huru Manu; is an online Ngāi Tahu digital atlas that records the traditional Māori place names and associated histories in the Ngāi Tahu rohe (tribal area). The publicly available website makes this traditional knowledge readily accessible to Ngāi Tahu whānui and the wider public for the first time.

Tāngata Ngāi Tahu: People of Ngāi Tahu; celebrates the rich and diverse lives of 50 Ngāi Tahu people. Published by Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu and Bridget Williams Books in 2017, the biographies in Tāngata Ngāi Tahu span 200 years of tribal history, shining new light on some old faces and bringing others into the light for the first time.

Long listed for the Ockham New Zealand Book Awards in 2018, the panel will explore tribal history through the lens of biography.
