Saturday's show is still going ahead - it will be a fundraiser with all profits from the show being donated to the relief fund for the victims of the Christchurch attack.
The Filipino stepson of New Zealand comedy comes to Christchurch with a brand new hour of comedy as part of the Boy Mestizo Tour.
Comedian James Roque has always thought that all his hang-ups about race were born when he stepped foot off that plane from the Philippines and onto his new home of New Zealand. Now he realises that he accidentally checked in some baggage. Join him as he unpacks it all – who knows what will come out.
Boy Mestizo is the next part of Roque’s journey to get back to his Filipino roots. A light-hearted, no-holds-barred takedown of the colonial thinking that grips the Filipino diaspora. From pinching their baby’s noses to try make it pointier like a white nose to using skin whitening products to try and make their skin whiter - no stone is left unturned as Roque asks the universal question; when you dismantle your history, what are you left with?
A familiar face on the New Zealand stand-up comedy scene, James is also featured on all of New Zealand’s primetime comedy TV shows. His credits include being a writer and cast member for Jono and Ben, 7 Days, Funny Girls and Only in Aotearoa. He was also featured on the 2018 NZ Comedy Gala. He is also a panellist for 7 Days and has had stand-out sets on the TV comedy specials AotearoHa and After Hours.
