The Michael King Writers Centre writer in residence, Jade Kake presents her upcoming book, Rebuilding the Kāinga, which looks at the resurgence of papa kāinga on whenua Māori over the last three decades. She will describe the current social and political context, reflect on the relevance of indigenous economies in the post-Treaty of Waitangi settlement era, and puts forward the idea of rebuilding our kāinga, our villages, as the primary unit for economic and political activity.
Kake will discuss some of our unique constraints, draw on innovative local and international models to suggest a way that Māori can build affordable homes and businesses on whānau, hapū, or treaty settlement lands, and describe the policy needed to make this all a reality.
