One of the cornerstone events of the Wellington choral scene is the annual May Workshop, hosted by the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Choral Federation. The event, which has run every year since 1988, attracts well over 150 singers, who put together a concert length piece of music over a single weekend. The workshop, traditionally held over the first weekend of May, starts with rehearsals on the Friday evening and all day Saturday, and ends with a public concert on Saturday evening. The concert regularly attracts large audiences, drawn by the prospect of hearing popular works performed by such a large group.
For 2019, which marks the 31st running of the event, Charles Gounod's St. Cecilia Mass has been selected as the featured work. Upon its release in 1855 this work catapulted Gounod to international acclaim.
After a successful 2018 workshop weekend, directed by Tecwyn Evans, the figurative baton of Musical Director will pass to Mark Dorrell. Mark has had a long career leading musical theatre in London and elsewhere. He directed the extremely successful Carmen for our 2013 May Workshop and The Armed Man for 2016.
