Join us photographing the Milky Way in Whatipu.
Whatipu beach is about 30 minutes drive from Titirangi.

Shoot the whole night through then edit your photos with us the following morning at the Waitipu Lodge.

The Milky Way will be stretching over Paratutae Island for the whole night, which can make for some truly stunning panoramas.

The evening workshop runs from 7pm until midnight, although it’s very common for us to continue shooting until dawn.

We will give some training in editing right on the beach with our laptop, so you can see your images come to life as you’re shooting them. The following morning we will continue our editing training at the lodge with anyone who has elected to stay overnight. The daytime editing workshop will finish at 12pm.

Accommodation at the Whatipu Lodge costs $40. This will get you a private room, showers and cooking facilities. Please bring your own sleeping bag and hot water bottle.

We'll be teaching camera settings and post-processing with your own photos! You'll learn to use Lightroom, Photoshop, PTgui and 3D LUT Creator to create truly astonishing images.

We watch the weather carefully in the days before the event and will cancel if it’s looking too cloudy (with a full refund). In the event that we turn up and there’s still intermittent cloud cover we will work on some post processing techniques between shots. We may also bring out the light-painting equipment and work on light-tube techniques if the cloud really sticks.

What you need to bring:
- A Camera (any modern digital camera with a detachable lens)
- A Tripod (essential for night photography)
- The Widest Lens You Have (ideally 24mm or less and with an aperture of 3.5 or lower. If you don't own one you can rent one from somewhere like Topic Rentals)
- A Torch (bring a red light if you have one, like a bicycle light. Red light helps you change your camera setting without blinding you or your neighbors)
- Warm Clothes (It can be surprisingly windy and cold!)
- A Cable Release or Remote (to allow your camera to take photos longer than 30 seconds)
Spare shoes and socks (there are a couple of shallow rivers that you'll have to cross - wet feet are almost a certainty)
- A Thermos of Your favourite hot drink
- If you’re staying at the lodge please bring a hot water bottle, a sleeping bag, and something for breakfast.

Please message us at highrestours@gmail.com if you have any questions or concerns about gear.

We've partnered with Topic Rentals to rent the gear you need or try something new at a significant discount. Just mention you’re on one of our workshops.
