Musica Viva Presents at the Globe

Palmerston North followers of violin virtuoso Hannah Fang will be disappointed to hear that she has had to cancel her scheduled concert at the Globe on Sunday November 17. Convenor of the series, Guy Donaldson, has however put together a Variety Concert of mainly classical music based upon the local music club Musica Viva (Live Music).

Musica Viva gives live performances of music of enduring quality each month from March to December members on a Monday evening concert at 7.30pm in the Evelyn Rawlins Room on the first floor of Square Edge. The concerts tend to be on the first or second Monday of the month, though there is inevitably some variation in this pattern.

Many of the performers featured in this concert will be familiar to Globe audiences, and include clarinetist Ingrid Vlieg, flutist Diana Neild, Baroque performers Roy Tankersley and Maurice Quinn, jazz pianist Chris Dann, and duet pianists Christine Archer-Lockwood and Guy Donaldson.

The programme will also include other fine performers yet to be heard as featured artists on the Globe stage. To ensure that the tone of the concert is not entirely serious there will also be some light vocal music including Gilbert and Sullivan numbers performed by Graham Doull and John Ramsay, and a duet version of Bette Midler’s The Rose by Mavis Fisher and Joe Pape. One extraordinary item will be a performance for solo flute of a piece depicting a Train Ride played by Emma Minchin.

One of the aims of Musica Viva is to nurture young performers in the Manawatu area through a Young Performers Scholarship which the Society has run with the support of the Palmerston North Rotary Club since 1993. The concert will include last year’s winner of the violin section – Melanie Pinkney, and this year’s outstanding winner of the piano scholarship - Ciaran Carroll.

In the 2018 national PACANZ competition featuring the best of New Zealand’s young performers Ciaran was nominated as the most promising pianist.
