This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New York City. The uprising, which began on 28 June 1969, is seen by many as a key moment in the birth of the Gay Liberation movement and the modern fight for LGBTI rainbow rights, particularly in the USA. However, in New Zealand the push for homosexual law reform and equality had begun years earlier.
Join us on 29 June 2019 for Our Stonewall – an inclusive celebration of local LGBTI people and events that have helped shape our rainbow communities in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Roger Smith and Gareth Watkins from Walk Tours NZ will highlight a representative sampling of historic events and individuals who have contributed to the development of our local rainbow communities. They’ll explore different types of activism and endeavours - from people on the front line of protests to individuals who, just by their lived experience, changed hearts and minds.
Postgraduate historian Will Hansen will reflect on rainbow activism today, drawing on historical threads to paint a picture of where we stand today, what we're still fighting for, and why.
The presentations will be followed by an opportunity for attendees to share their thoughts and memories. Come and share this special 50th anniversary of Stonewall by looking forward and looking back.
Free entry (koha appreciated to help with hall hire).
