Ports of Auckland

Ever wondered how we keep track of all the containers on the port? Take a guided group tour to the Ports of Auckland Capacity & Planning Tower and meet the team that plan and manage our container yard where nearly one million containers are handled each year.

You'll be greeted by one of our team at the Information Booth at our SeePort Festival on Captain Cook Wharf, before making your way down to the Capacity & Planning Tower. From there you'll be shown how containers are loaded on and off ships and how our straddles know which containers to pick up and where to place them. As our port operates 24/7, you might just get to see some planners and the yard in action!

We run these behind-the-scenes tours as part of our annual open weekend, SeePort, to give Aucklanders a chance to discover how the port helps deliver the things we all need and enjoy. To secure your spot, there is a small fee, with all proceeds going to the William C Daldy Preservation Society; a charity who keep Auckland's steam tugboat, the William C Daldy in ship-shape condition.

As you will be entering a Customs-controlled area and will need to present photographic ID if you are 16 years and over. Anyone under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and must have their identity vouched for. Please note you will need to climb a few flights of stairs to reach the Control Centre.
