Taylor-Jensen Fine Arts is hosting a most unusual art buying opportunity.

Over 40 silkscreen prints, many framed, amassed by a local collector will be exhibited and sold on a Cash & Carry basis. Artworks by New Zealand graphic artist Malcolm Warr (b. NZ 1939) will be both hung on the walls of the gallery’s changing exhibition space, displayed in a print bin and others simply leaned against the gallery walls enabling potential buyers to view all the works in this unique collection.

The works are being sold ‘as is / where is’ enabling the collection owner to offer them at much reduced prices. Information on locating a paper conservator and/or a conservation framer will be supplied for those buyers whose purchase require conservation or re-framing. Retro-Spective is based on a single-owner collection of Warr’s work from 1978 to the mid-1990s. Malcolm Warr is still New Zealand’s maestro silkscreen and intaglio printer.

His soft colours, representative New Zealand landscape and his often soft-focus, romantic scenery continue to be a favourite of today’s retro enthusiast. The significance of these prints can be summed up by pointing out that out local Manawatu Art Gallery (a branch of the regional history, science and art museum, Te Manawa) owns 35 examples of Malcolm Warr’s silkscreen prints. In recent years Warr has turned to painting and continues to be a recognisable name in the art world both in New Zealand and throughout the world.

Malcolm Warr was born in Wellington in 1939; he graduated from Elam School of Fine Arts in 1960 with a Diploma in Fine Arts (Hons). He worked as a commercial artist before commencing his teacher training. Warr produced paintings in oil, watercolour and acrylic throughout his art career but is best known for his silkscreens and intaglio prints.

Warr’s silkscreens featuring his pioneering work in developing the gradations of colour which was a different approach than laying down colour in blocks as was done by previous silkscreen artists. This innovation helped him to become a popular artist whose work is still found in offices, clinics, banks, school halls and in private homes throughout New Zealand. Warr worked almost exclusively as a printmaker from 1975 to 1995. Since 2002 he has concentrated on painting.

Malcolm Warr has exhibited extensively around New Zealand; he has also shown in Australia and England. Work by Warr can be found at the Auckland Art Gallery; the Aigantighe Art Gallery, Timaru; the Canterbury Public Library; the Dowse Art Museum, Petone; MTG Hawke’s Bay; the Hocken Library and as aforementioned, Te Manawa Art Gallery.

Retro-Spective: Cash & Carry Sale of Prints by Malcolm Warr will open on Saturday 23rd February and continue through Tuesday 19th March at Taylor-Jensen Fine Arts, 33 George Street, Palmerston North. The public is cordially invited to attend and view this unique assemblage of work by one of New Zealand’s notable print artists.
