Sam Hickson approached our gallery with an offer to volunteer in December 2018. Sam is now part of the gallery generously giving up his time to help with installations and greeting the public.
We are delighted that he will be showing his work in his first solo exhibition. Taking inspiration from Charles Goldie, Gottfried Lindauer and Paul Gauguin, Sam’s portraits are technically characteristic and capture the individual’s spirit and expression. After his latest trip to Vietnam, Sam has created a body of work that captures the hustle with his bristle!
“For many years the focus of my painting has been portraiture and studies of the human face. I am now moving towards depicting the whole person in his or her urban surroundings. My inspiration comes from different cultures, particularly those in densely populated Asian cities such as Bangkok, Tokyo, Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.
I love the atmosphere of busy metropolitan life in Asia, the hustle and bustle of street trade, bargaining and negotiating one’s way around the chaos of people, tuk-tuks, motorcycles and cars. It is this extraordinary vibrancy of life in Asian megacities that I try and capture in my paintings.” Sam Hickson.
Join us on the opening night Friday 11 October from 6pm.
