This workshop presents information on the latest statistics of New Zealand suicide and self harm rates, models for understanding risk and protective factors along with recommendations for management plans.

This is designed for professionals wanting a refresher or for those who are new to the area of suicide and self harm. This will be a highly interactive, practical workshop and participants will be provided with the opportunity to practice skills taught via role play and demonstrations.

Overview
- Brief overview of definitions and recent statistics as well as models to understand suicide risk and self-harm
- Identification of suicide; screening questions and ways of formulating risk levels
- Acute and ongoing management of people with suicidal ideation and self-harm

Learning Intentions
Participants will be provided with the opportunity to:
- Discuss the recent New Zealand data on suicide and self-harm
- Identify frameworks for understanding suicide risk, tools which are later useful for screening and communication with others about a person’s suicide risk
- Practice carrying out a suicide screening session
- Develop confidence in how to manage persons with suicidal ideation and self-harm behaviours
