There are times when good news becomes even better news. Not only will speedway race cars be part of this Saturday’s Alexandra Blossom Grand Procession, but the evening’s $1500 Burnout competition at Central Motor Speedway in Cromwell is already attracting some 20 competitors from places as far away as the Hawkes Bay and Auckland.

“The enthusiastic response by crowds lining Centennial Avenue last year really spurred us on to having speedway classes like sprintcars, saloons, six shooters and youth ministocks again be part of the Grand Procession,” says speedway promoter, Jason Scott. “And after so many people turned up at Central Motor Speedway in Sandflat Road for last year’s Blossom Festival Burnout how could we not put on another tyre screeching, engine revving, exhaust bellowing, smoking hot show.

“Besides having so many competitors ready to drop their clutches and stomp on the accelerator on our skidpad, we’ll be handing out free gate entry passes as the procession makes its way along Centennial Avenue. Be sure to be roadside for the 11.45am start time as we’re among the first in the procession.

“Again this year, we’ve been careful not to get in the way of the Blossom Festival programme by starting track action and burnout from 4.30pm. Gates will be opening at 4pm for those who want to park trackside. Race cars from the parade and many more will be kicking up the clay on the speedway track and there’s a big welcome for visitors to the pits to check out the cars and meet drivers and crew.

“Further great news for anyone reading this who wants to burn rubber without the risk of being slapped with a fine and loss of license for more than two seconds of ‘sustained loss of traction’ is we’ll be taking late entries on the night. We’re pretty much open to any vehicle from specialised burnout cars through hot rods, classic American and Aussie sixes and V8’s to modern cars. An entry form is on the Downloads page of www.centralmotorspeedway.co.nz or can be filled in on arrival in the pits.

“For the 2019-20 season, we’ve put together a full-on calendar. Look at October alone. We’ve this Saturday’s Blossom Festival Process and Burnout followed by our Bathurst Funday on the 12th and the opening meeting on the 26th. A special feature of this meeting will be round one of the Southern Sprintcar Series that will be run in a way to double the excitement of sprintcar racing.”
