'Flag Books' with Terrie Reddish:

Join us for this bookbinding workshop with local bookbinding and letterpress expert Terrie Reddish. This workshop will focus on making a flag book.

A flag book is a visually intricate structure of opposing flaps or “flags” which creates a unique book that showcases contrasting or cohering images and text. The foundation of the deceptively simple flag book structure is an accordion folded spine. This stunning structure was created by Heidi Kyle and has infinite possibilities.

With multiple angles of view, the flags provide interesting double narrative potentials, contrasting viewpoints, or “yin and yang”. When read page by page, the viewer sees disjointed fragments of image and text. When the spine is pulled fully open, these fragments assemble a panoramic spread. This transformation is accompanied by a delightful flapping sound.

The “flags” can be coloured paper, ephemera, drawings, photographs or abstract imagery. This book structure is great for creating special cards for holidays, birthdays or memoirs, or simply as a piece of art.

About Terrie:
Terrie Reddish was first attracted to learn more about bookbinding after purchasing a 300 year old book in need of repair. Her contact with a traditionally trained and experienced conservator, Paul Taylor, led to bookbinding classes in 2005. Already a member of the Association of Book Crafts, Terrie became their Editrix for six years and continues to manage their Facebook page. She has gone on to study overseas with Don Glaister, Coleen Curry, Dominic Riley, Michael Burke,Fred Pohlmann, John and Joy Tonkin. Terrie teaches bookbinding and pencil drawing throughout NZ.

Terrie uses restored tools and vintage equipment to create unique art, fine press books, broadsheets and prints. Her artwork is often three dimensional and loosely based on book structures. Paper is her main medium. It might be book board, marbled paper, Japanese tissue paper, handmade or recycled paper. Tyvek and Kraft-tex occasionally make an appearance, although they are not technically ‘paper’. Gold foil, fabric and leather feature as well.
