The Archaeology of Food: Ancient and Modern

Explore the archaeology of food from two contrasting perspectives, ancient Rome and 19th century New Zealand.

Alison Griffith (Associate Professor in Classics at the University of Canterbury) is a specialist in Roman urban environments and Roman religion and cults. She will look at the remains of ancient cafes (popinae), bars (tabernae), inns (cauponae), and hotels (hospitia) and talk about their role in feeding the urban populace and providing services in order to answer the question “Has anything really changed?”

Clara Watson is an artefact specialist at Underground Overground Archaeology. She works on cataloguing and researching the many weird and wonderful artefacts left behind by the nineteenth century residents of Christchurch. In her talk Clara will be speaking about some of the nineteenth century pubs and hotels that have been excavated following the Canterbury earthquakes, and what was found during the excavations.
