Selwyn Community Education is based at Selwyn College, Kohimarama, Auckland.

In her talk, Dr. Luders will first introduce the phenomenon of neuroplasticity and then demonstrate how the study of mindfulness fits into this field of research. More specifically, she will present outcomes from an ongoing science project designed to analyze brain features in long-term meditation practitioners. The project comprises more than a dozen studies – all of them revealing exciting insights into the unique brain anatomy of meditators, including evidence for their seemingly younger brains.

About Dr Eileen Luders
Dr. Eileen Luders received her B.A. and M.A. from the University of Magdeburg in Germany and her Ph.D. from the University of Zurich in Switzerland. Trained in neuropsychology and neuroscience, she performed the majority of her research studies at UCLA in the United States (2002-2017) and recently accepted a position at the University of Auckland.

Dr. Luders’ research is focused on understanding the human brain using high-resolution neuroimaging and state-of-the-art brain mapping techniques. Central themes of her studies are brain plasticity, brain development and aging, as well as abnormalities in brain anatomy as often associated with specific diseases, disabilities, and disorders.
