The long-awaited grand reopening of the iconic city pipe organ in the auditorium of Christchurch Town Hall.
Silent for the last eight years, with 12 new ranks of pipes installed by the builders, Rieger of Austria,in 2010 but never heard publicly, the great pipe organ has been fully restored after minor earthquake damage, to resound in joyous celebration under the skilled fingers and feet of the organ curator, international concert organist Martin Setchell.
The programme of entertaining music will highlight the new solo colours (like the clarinet and voix humaine) as well as the stunning full organ.
One highlight will be a brilliant new work, appropriately entitled 'Celebration', specially commissioned by Martin from the popular Norwegian composer Mons Leidvin Takle.
Most of the programme will be available to take away on Martin's new CD recorded in January, which will be on sale at the concerts.
To keep up to date with details of the opening events, further concerts, and the new CD, please regularly visit the organ's website www.nzorgan.com and www.organist.co.nz.
