Give back to nature and join the Pukenui/Western Hills Forest Charitable Trust as they declare war against the weeds around the Whau Valley Dam.
Pukenui Forest was logged back in the 1920's. Its vigorous regeneration shows a remarkable case of nature resilience. Thanks to huge community effort the pest species are managed to low numbers and native flora and fauna are thriving, including the North Island Brown Kiwi. As part of the continued effort to restore this valuable area planting was done around the Whau Valley Dam in July.
This time around we will be releasing those native plantings of those fast growing weeds to help them in their growth, as well as tackling other surrounding areas.
The weeds don't stick to the tracks so nor do we. Expect steep slopes and tight squeezes through dense vegetation. Expect dirt in your fingernails and sticks in your hair. Be sure to wear appropiate clothing for the work, gardening gloves and sturdy footwear. A hat and glasses really help too!
This work is physical, and not suitable for children under 10 years of age.
Meet at the Whau Valley Dam at the end of Whau Valley Road, Whangarei.
Bring yourself a reusable water bottle and enjoy some delicious kai on us.
Please ensure that your footwear is clean before arrival, as part of managing Kauri Dieback.
