Whakaipo Lodge

Two great kiwi bands for the one ticket price. (As featured in the latest "Dish' magazine "What's On section!)

Celebrate the final days of Summer at Whakaipo Lodge's Summer Concert fundraiser. First up is the Andrew London Trio with their new album "Standard Deviations" and lots of good, old stuff too. Then Laura Collins & the Back Porch Blues Band return for a true "Back Porch" experience to round out this fabulous annual Summer musical event.

Previous concerts have been very popular. Tickets will be limited, so get in quick. Proceeds from the concert will once again assist Bike Taupo and Kids Bike Taupo in their awesome work for the Taupo community. There will be refreshments on site: the Volcanic Coffee Cart and Lula's Empanada Food Truck. Picnic hampers also welcome.
Bring a hat, sunblock and a chilled out vibe. We'll see you there!

About the bands:
Wellington based Laura Collins and the Back Porch Blues Ban will be loving the blues ‘live’ as always. This band are dynamic, masterful and all about entertainment. Laura, who is up front from the very start, with high energy, cheek and vocal strength leads and celebrates her band – and gives them licence to shine. And shine they do, with Wayne Mason, well-known singer songwriter, master of boogie ‘burning it up’ on the keys and adding his iconic voice to the vocal mix. Think Fats Domino, think Dr John, think Professor Longhair and you’ll be in the right honky tonk. John O'Connor will be ‘eating it up’ on lead guitar, never self-indulgent – just soulful and astonishing. He’s played with everyone along the way, from BB King to Kiri Te Kanawa. The rhythm section brings a warm acoustic volume with George Barris on tasty upright bass and Peter CogswellL on the ‘back porch’ drums proving that you don’t need to be loud to groove. Expect to hear a little Fats Domino, Beth Hart, Bonnie Raitt, Nina Simone, John Lee Hooker, some of Laura’s own and others she can put her stamp on, all with their roots in the blues. Laura says "Blues comes straight from the heart and that’s just how I like it, it’s accessible, joyful, heart full music and not only that it makes me want to move – what’s not to like?”

Andrew London has been a regular at Whakaipo Lodge's Concerts. The Andrew London Trio's satirical, whimsical and comedic songs are wrapped in a 1940s ‘Hot Club’ swing, jazz, blues or country-style package. Line up includes Kirsten London on bass and Nils Olsen on saxophone. Their new album, 'Standard Deviations,’ will also feature and is a selection of 16 of their favourite and most-requested jazz and swing standards.

Along with Wayne Mason & Laura Collins, Andrew frequently travels and records with "Too Many Chiefs" (featured in our inaugural Winter Concert this year truly one of the best concerts we've had.)
