Barry Korcheski, an amateur astronomer and member of the astronomy section with the Nelson Science Society will talk about “Why do Stars Blow Up? and “Will a Star Explosion hurt Planet Earth?"

The presentation will cover the basic astrophysical processes involved with how and why stars die and what effect they have on our understanding of the universe. Some of the topics covered will include Type 1a,1b,1c, and II supernovae, concept of Standard Candles, inner core fusion, the periodic table from an astronomy perspective and possible star candidates for close supernova explosions that might affect earth. The presentation will be about 45 minutes in length followed with questions and discussions.
